International operations

The Regional Council of Lapland is the driving force behind the international operations in Lapland. International collaboration aims at implementing the shared development objectives of the entire region.

The Regional Council cooperates actively with several organisations in safeguarding the common interests of the region. The focal point of the international operations in Lapland lies in collaboration with the neighbouring countries and in pan-European operation.

International tasks of the Regional Council of Lapland include:

  • implementing and managing EU programmes
  • managing the North Finland EU Office together with the Oulu region and Central Ostrobothnia
  • operating as a member in the Barents Regional Council and the Barents Regional Committee
  • operating as a member in the North Calotte Council and being responsible for its secretarial duties
  • actively participating in the Northern Periphery Programme collaboration
  • actively operating in the Assembly of European Regions (AER)
  • cooperating with Russia and the region of Murmansk in particular
  • cooperating with the Hungarian Transdanubian region, and with Veszprém county in particular.
